16-17th March 2018, CDR academic staff were honoured to be invited to give talks in Kratom Addiction Symposium at World of Addiction 2018 conference organised by Institute of Mental Health, Addiction, and Neuroscience, Jakarta Indonesia. Dr. Siti Rafidah Yusof gave a talk on Kratom (Mitragyna speciosa): historical perspective to current scenario. Dr. Juzaili Azizi gave a talk titled Phytochemistry of Mitragyna speciosa and the general pharmacology of its major alkaloid, mitragynine. Dr. Farah Wahida Suhaimi gave a talk on The pharmacological effects of kratom and its toxicity. Dr. Norsyifa Harun gave a talk on The potential use of kratom as a replacement therapy of opioid addiction. The director of CDR, Prof. Dr. B. Vicknasingam was invited as plenary speaker and gave a talk on Current treatment of ATS and Opiates, and also conducted a workshop on Behavioral intervention and pharmacotherapy for co-occuring opioid and ATS dependence.

International Drug Talk Series: High Level Stake Holders DIscussion on Drug Policy


16th January 2018, CDR in collaboration with National Anti-drugs Agency has organised International Drug Talk Series. The speaker invited was Professor Peter Reuter from School of Public Policy and the Department of Criminology, University of Maryland, USA. Prof. Reuter gave a talk titled, What do we know about effective and humane drug control? Drawing lessons from the past two decades of global experience. The talk was also attended by Secretary General, Ministry of Home Affairs, YBhg. Dato’ Seri Alwi bin Hj Ibrahim. The participants certainly benefitted from the talk given by Prof. Reuter, and the dialogue session that follows.

14th December 2017, Professor Dr. Sharif Mahsufi Mansor, eminent professor at CDR gave a public lecture on Ketum (Mitragyna speciosa): Sejarah Penggunaan dan Penemuan Terkini. The lecture was attended by top management of Universiti Sains Malaysia including the university’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Datuk Dr. Asma Ismail, the university’s staff and students, PDRM Narcotic Department, media, and members of the public. In his lecture, Prof. Sharif explained about the historical use of ketum, findings from scientific research and potential areas to be further investigated regarding the plant. The lecture was very informative and ended with lunch hosted by CDR.

International Symposium on Ketum

5-7th April 2017, CDR proudly organised International Symposium on Ketum held from 5-7th April 2017 at Eastern & Oriental Hotel Penang, jointly-supported by Universiti Sains Malaysia and NIDA. The meeting was attended by local and international researchers who are involved in multidisciplinary research on ketum. We are honoured to listen to talks by researchers from the US, UK, Thailand and Malaysia on findings from ketum research and current scenario of ketum use in the different countries. The outcome of the meeting is formation of collaborations between CDR with local/overseas institutions in ketum research, to evaluate its potential benefit and also harm for the benefit of the society worldwide.

MBBC Zone B Final Round 2017

28th March 2017, Malaysian Brain Bee Challenge (MBBC) 2017 Zone B Final Round was hosted by CDR, coordinated by Dr. Siti Rafidah Yusof and Dr. Zurina Hassan. This year, 18 selected schools participated in the event, with total of 94 (form 3-5) students. The students were given reading materials on neuroscience and tested on their understanding on the subject during the event. The event was also conducted concurrently at several other states throughout the country, hosted by universities which include: USM Health Campus (main zone), UUM, UM, UPM, UniSZA, UKM, UNIMAS and UMS. Top 3 winners of the event in each zone will compete at National Grand Final Round which is scheduled on May 2nd and 3rd 2017, organised by the Department of Neuroscience, USM Health Campus. MBBC 2017 Champion will represent Malaysia in International Brain Bee 2017 in Washington DC USA.
