CDR TO HOST LABORATORY ANIMAL RESEARCH WORKSHOP

23 JUNE 2026, GEORGETOWN - The Centre for Drug Research (CDR), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), in collaboration with Pusat Kanser Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, will organise a two-day workshop titled “From Ethics to Execution: A Comprehensive Workshop on Laboratory Animal Research” from 14 to 15 September 2026 at the Centre for Drug Research, USM Main Campus.The workshop is designed to provide researchers, postgraduate students, veterinarians, and technicians with comprehensive exposure to ethical, technical, and practical aspects of laboratory animal research. It will cover key areas including animal models for respiratory research, biocompatibility studies, cancer animal models, metabolic disease models, animal behaviour studies, anaesthesia and euthanasia protocols, and tissue sampling techniques.

The first day will feature a series of expert talks by academic and research specialists, including Prof. Dr. Badrul Hisham Yahaya, Prof. Dr. Zurina Hassan, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Rafeezul Mohamed, Dr. Ooi Jer Ping, Dr. Norsyifa Harun, Dr. Farah Wahida Suhaimi, and Dr. Juzaili Azizi. Participants will also take part in hands-on group rotations involving anaesthesia and euthanasia protocols in rodents, as well as cardiac perfusion and tissue sampling.

The second day will focus on interactive live demonstrations, including brain surgery and electrophysiological recording, stereotaxic techniques, in-situ brain perfusion techniques, Morris water maze tasks, elevated-plus maze tasks, and open field tests.
